It’s Great British Bake Off time again
These lovely little treats are just right to celebrate the start of the Great British Bake Off 2024 – a classic shortbread with a couple of twists, should you wish.
Add a little orange zest or some dark chocolate if you wish for a bit of extra luxury. Or both for some serious decadence.
And if you happen to have recently bought some ground Bronte pistachios from Sicily, feel free to scatter some of those over your biscuits.
How to serve
Bake then enjoy with a cup of tea.
Orange shortbreads, with or without chocolate
Makes 18-20 biscuits
Ingredients
- 225g unsalted butter
- 110g caster sugar
- 300g plain flour
- 1 orange
- 50g dark chocolate (optional)
- 1 tbsp ground pistachios (optional)
Instructions
- Line two baking trays with baking parchment.
- Preheat the oven to 190ºC/170ºC fan/gas 5.
- Dice the butter and place in a food processor with the sugar, flour and the zest of the orange.
- Blend until everything comes together, then turn on to the worktop and work gently to make a smooth, soft dough.
- Dust the worktop with a little extra flour and roll the dough out to 4-5mm thick.
- Use a 6-7cm cutter to cut into biscuits.
- Bake for around 10 minutes until lightly golden, then place on a cooling rack.
- If you are adding chocolate, break it up and place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a small saucepan of simmering water.
- Stir until melted and smooth, then use a teaspoon to drizzle over the biscuits.
- Scatter over a little ground pistachio if you wish.
